Reading In open stack rooms, you can search library materials for yourself. If you have used materials within the library, please return them to the return desks on the floor.
*Please return materials you checked out at the counter.

Check-out Materials in open stack rooms can be borrowed by using self check out machines. Some materials (Reference books, Audio-visual materials, Rare books, et.al) may not be taken out. Materials in closed stack rooms can be borrowed at the counter.

Return Please return library materials at the counter or the book drop. Library materials borrowed from Central Library and North Library can be returned to both libraries. You cannot borrow and renew any materialswhen you hold overdue materials.If you keep materials for more than 4 days beyond their due dates, your library privileges are suspended for days in arrears from the day you return materials (maximum 30 days).

Copying You can copy library materials for yourself in the libraries. You must observe copyright, and before copying, please present the application form at the counter.

Copy fee is paid by cash (coin or 1000 yen bill) or copy card of the Univ. Coop.

If you want to pay by school fund, the copy card of school fund or the slip for copying is needed.

In the North Library, however, the copy card cannot be used and the slip can be receipted only weekdays.



Searching Library Materials If you can access the Internet, you can use Library Catalog(OPAC) and search materials of Hokkaido University Library anywhere. In searching, take notice of "Location" and "Call No.".

"Call No." is a combnation of number and alpfabet which is displayed at spam of books. Library books are sorted in Call No. order.

Materials in "Paperback Book's corner" are not sorted in Call No. but in series of books.

Periodical is sorted in alphabetical order.


Using the Closed Stack Rooms When you use materials in the closed stack rooms, please present "Library Material Request Form" at the counter. Library staff will bring the materials from the stack rooms for you.The following member of Hokkaido University can enter the stack rooms.

  • Central Library: Faculties, Staffs, Graduates, Research students, Undergraduates who have attended the user guidance program of the stack rooms (provided in Japanese)
  • North Library: Faculties, Staffs, Graduates, Research students, all Undergraduates

When you enter the stack rooms in North Library, you need a procedure at the counter.


Renewal (only for University Members) University Members can renew the borrowing materials, if they are not overdue or other patrons don't reserve the materials. You can renew materials in open stack rooms 2 times, in closed stack rooms 4 times.

The way of renewing is following,

  • Take the materials at the library at which you borrowed them.
  • Proceed on online
    (*Library ID, ELMS-ID or SSO-ID is needed)

Reservation (only for University Members) University Members can reserve the materials which other patrons checked out. When the materials you reserve are ready, we contact you, and please check out them during the period we specified. The materials you can reserve are the materials which are displayed "On lending" or "Under reserve" in Library Catalog(OPAC).For reserving, Library ID No. or SSO-ID is needed.
