Taizo Nakamura was one of the few researchers of geography in Russia, the former Soviet Union and the East European area. Nakamura was born in 1933 and served as a professor at Osaka City University for a long time. After retiring from his position there, he taught at Osaka University of Economics and Law and Kyoto Women’s University. At Hokkaido University, he worked as an affiliate professor at the Slavic Research Center in 1992 and 1993. This collection consists of literature donated by Nakamura in July 2005, and contains a total of 1,751 books. A large part of the collection consists of geography- and economy-related books and materials written in Russian, which were published in the Soviet Union after World War II. In addition, reflecting his research objectives, the collection includes literature on a variety of regions in the Soviet Union and Eastern European countries including the Ukraine, the Far East, Central Asia, Bulgaria and Poland. This represents one of the characteristics of the collection. There are also almost 100 maps of various cities and regions. The Mikami collection at Kyushu University and the Gibson collection at Hokkaido University also exist as collections related to Russia and East European geography in Japan. However, the Nakamura collection takes on extra significance with its books on other disciplines such as economic geography.
